Oyo promotes 12,000 teachers

A massive promotion exercise that is putting smile on the faces of 12,104 secondary school teachers in the service of Oyo State government has been concluded.

A massive promotion exercise that is putting smile on the faces of 12,104 secondary school teachers in the service of Oyo State government has been concluded.

Chairman of the state’s Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Chief Samuel Adetutu, disclosed this in a chat with reporters in Ibadan yesterday.

According to Adetutu, the number, which includes 200 principals, represents those who scaled through the rigorous written test and interviews conducted for all candidates who were due for promotion.

The promotion takes effect from this month.

The promoted teachers represent about 73 per cent of the 17, 970 teaching staff strength of the commission.

Adetutu has been lately under fire over allegation of fixing salaries of teachers to earn high interests in banks. But he said those behind the ‘mischief’ are only exhibiting ignorance as he has never seen the master cheque with which the commission pays teachers salaries.

He said: "It is an error of judgment on the functions and performance of TESCOM to say that the chairman is fixing teachers salaries. I have never seen the master cheque with which the government pays teachers salaries since I resumed in this office."

Pledging that teachers in the state will start receiving their salaries without delay starting from this month, Adetutu explained that the delays were caused by bureaucratic bottleneck which has been resolved with the banks and government departments involved in the payment process.

His words: "As I’m speaking to you, government is not owing teachers any kobo. All salaries have been paid. The government has paid all leave bonuses up to last December. Late payment of salaries has been adequately addressed by the government because bureaucratic bottleneck has been removed".
