OPC Arrests Four Suspected Armed Robbers

Four suspected armed robbers, terrorising residents of Shomolu and its environs, have been arrested by members of the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC), Emiloju zone, Shomolu, and handed over to the police.

Four suspected armed robbers, terrorising residents of Shomolu and its environs, have been arrested by members of the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC), Emiloju zone, Shomolu, and handed over to the police.

The names of the suspects were given as Gabriel Amao, Razak Soroye, Remi Afolayan and Ola, all of no fixed address. The suspects were arrested when a member of the gang, identified as Yemi Stubborn, now on the run, allegedly stole a laptop, Nokia handset and N140,000 at 13, Awoseyin Street, Shomolu.

The owner of the stolen items (names withheld) was said to have alerted the OPC about the incident. The OPC men, it was learnt, stormed the hideout of the gang at Mushin, after a tip-off and arrested Ola, Remi and another member of the gang, while Yemi escaped.

During interrogation, Ola allegedly confessed to the OPC team that his gang was the brain behind every robbery incident that took place in Shomolu and its environs. One of such incidents, according to Ola, was an attack on worshippers at Saint Dominic Church, Yaba, on 31 December, 2008, where he said over 100 GSM handsets were stolen. Each of the handsets was sold for N2,000, he added.

The suspectís confession led to the arrest of other gang members who were picked up at different locations and hideouts. Two bullets were reportedly found on one of the suspects, Remi Afolayan, who was described as a notorious armed robbery suspect who had participated in many robbery operations in the state.

The suspects were later handed over to men of the state anti-robbery squad (SARS), for further interrogation. A member of the SARS team, who craved for anonymity, confirmed the arrest of the four suspects.
