Policemen Shoot Tanker Driver At Ejigbo

Confusion reigned supreme at the NNPC junction, Ejigbo, a suburb of Lagos, at the weekend, when policemen shot a petroleum tanker driver.

Confusion reigned supreme at the NNPC junction, Ejigbo, a suburb of Lagos, at the weekend, when policemen shot a petroleum tanker driver.

The shooting led to the burning of a police vehicle by aggrieved residents and petroleum tanker drivers. This led to confusion, as residents and passersby ran helter-skelter to avoid arrest by a reinforcement of policemen who stormed the area.

Investigations revealed that the shooting occurred around 2.30 p.m., when a petroleum tanker driver, identified as Baba Sikiru, was driving one-way towards the NNPC depot, in his Volkswagen Golf car.

A police patrol team from the Ejigbo divisional headquarters was said to have ordered him to stop, but he refused. The policemen, it was gathered, chased him in their vehicle and shot him at the NNPC junction. Suspecting that they could be attacked by irate tanker drivers, the policemen abandoned their vehicle and fled.

The vehicle was later burnt by angry residents and passersby who witnessed the action. The victim was rushed to a private hospital at Okota, where he is currently being treated. Most shop owners in the area hurriedly closed their shops and fled after the police vehicle was burnt.

When P.M.News visited the Ejigbo police station, there was an unusual silence. Policemen were seen gathered in groups, discussing the incident.
