More revelations about how contracts were inflated at the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), between 2001 and 2003, have continued to emerge in the ongoing trial of Chief Olabode George, on the N85 billion NPA contract scam.

At the resumed hearing of the matter yesterday, a prosecution witness, Engr. Mustapha Bukar, told the court that the administrative panel which he chaired, discovered lots of irregularities in the pricing and contracts awarded during George’s tenure as the Chairman, NPA Board.

Engr. Bukar told the presiding judge, Justice Olubunmi Oyewole, that his committee discovered that about 29,526 contracts, worth over N85 billion, were awarded without following due process.

According to him, the price intelligence unit system and due process were flagrantly disregarded by the Bode George-led board in the award of those contracts. The witness also revealed that many contracts were split and awarded to the same company under different names.

Under cross examination, Engr. Bukar admitted further that one of the committee members, Greg Ogbuefum, wrote a petition against the NPA board.

He agreed with the defence counsel, Tunji Ayanlaja, that it was morally wrong for Ogbuefum to be a member of the committee investigating the board he petitioned against.
