Landlords, Tenants Advised On Multi-Door CourtHouse

Landlords have been called upon to make use of the Multi-Door Courthouse to resolve their disagreements, instead of wasting precious time in litigation.

A Lagos lawyer, Barrister Buoro, who made this plea, observed that cases beween landlords and tenants waste both the time of the court and the litigants. He explained that the matters could easily be resolved at the Multi-Door Courthouse

Buoro stated: ”Issue of landlords and tenants relationship is contractual, that is, it is an agreement freely reached between both parties when the property is let out. When disagreement arises, both parties’ interest will be best served, if they take active role in how the matter is resolved.”

He emphasised that the Multi-Door Courthouse was a creation of law and that its operations were guided by law and administered by highly skilled professionals known as meditators. He pointed out that like the conventional courts, parties that go for mediation are represented by lawyers identified as mediation advocates.

Barrister Buoro disclosed that unlike the outcome of other alternative dispute resolution processes, agreements reached at the Lagos Multi-Door Courthouse are enforced by law as consent judgement of the Lagos High Court. ”What this means in practice is that unlike regular court judgements which may be obtained after several years of legal battles in courts, a consent judgement is obtained by a mutual agreement of both parties that does not take more than two days sessions at the Multi-Door Courthouse.

He condemned the erroneous belief that the Multi-Door Courthouse was like a village square where anything goes and where the rights of the parties are not given any consideration in the resolution of disputes.
