Oil boss kidnapped in Nigeria freed after ransom paid

LAGOS - An executive with French oil company Total taken hostage in southern Nigeria one week ago was freed Monday after a ransom was paid, a security source said.

LAGOS - An executive with French oil company Total taken hostage in southern Nigeria one week ago was freed Monday after a ransom was paid, a security source said.

Ikechi Anozie was seized last Monday night, and Joint Delta Task Force police chief Musa Sagir confirmed the local executive's release after a security source who requested anonymity said a ransom was paid.

Beyond confirming his freedom, Sagir himself refused to divulge any details relating to the end of Anozie's ordeal.

Anozie's wife was also taken last November although she had since been released.

Kidnappings of oil company personnel for ransom are commonplace in restive southern Nigeria.

Expatriate personnel are the preferred target, but as companies have beefed up security around foreign staff, armed gangs have increasingly turned their attention to Nigerian staff and their families.
