IN Islamic scholar in Nasarawa State, Sheik Shaib Ismail, has faulted the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), over its law on compulsory use of helmet for all motorcycle riders and their passengers in the state, describing it as anti-sharia.

Reacting to the law on the introduction of the helmet which has continued to generate controversy in the state, Sheik Ismail, who is also the chairman, Council of Ulamas of the Nasarawa State chapter of Jama’tu Izalatu Bida Wakamatu Sunah (JIBWS) said various interests and people were not considered before the introduction of the law by the FRSC.

He wondered how Muslim scholars and traditional rulers who are always in turban would be forced to wear helmets while riding motorcycles.

"This is rubbish and it can’t work,’’ he lambasted.

The Islamic scholar therefore, advised that the law should either be revoked or made optional to allow for traditional rulers do without the helmet.

However, the Nasarawa state Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mrs. Susan Ajenge said she would leave no stone unturned to ensure strict compliance to road safety regulations, warning that violators of the laws would be arrested and their motorcycles impounded.

She appealed to all motorcycle riders to obey simple traffic rules and regulations, which are generally formulated to ‘’safeguard lives on our road.’’
