NURTW Official Sent To Prison

An executive member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Bola Obe, 39, has been sent to the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, Apapa, for improper conduct during court proceedings.

An executive member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Bola Obe, 39, has been sent to the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, Apapa, for improper conduct during court proceedings.

The accused allegedly conducted himself in an improper manner during the hearing of a divorce suit between him and his wife, Serifat, at the Agege Grade ‘A’ Customary Court, Lagos.

The court’s president, Chief Emmanuel Kolawole Bruce, who gave the order for his remand, said: “For not conducting yourself in a proper manner during court’s proceedings, in spite of several warnings, and for failing to heed caution, you are hereby sentenced to a one month prison term, at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, Lagos.”

The NURTW treasurer, who was the respondent in a divorce petition filed by his wife, allegedly interrupted his wife’s evidence several times during the proceedings. His wife, Serifat, said she wanted divorce because of irreconciliable differences between them. She accused her estranged husband of battery and lying.

According to the mother of five: “He always beat me; he harasses me in public and often strips me in public whenever we have a misunderstanding. Most times, he attacks me for no just cause.

“Almost all our co-tenants have seen me naked because he often attacks me in public. There was a time he broke my back. I was hospitalised and my family paid the medical bills,” she said.

She added that her neighbours and co-tenants were afraid of him. “They told me that they would have come to testify against him but were afraid of him because he might attack them.”

Serifat described her husband further, as uncaring and a selfish man who always threatens to kill her anytime she told him that she was pregnant for him.

“My lord, I am not saying all these to get sympathy. He is not caring and loving. He does not want me to have children for him. Each time I tell him that I am pregnant, he always threatens to kill me. “I had to hide my pregnancy from him each time I was pregnant.

“He often creates a scene whenever he returns home drunk. He drinks ogogoro and smokes Indian hemp. He often returns home late at night, and disturbs tenants. Her husband agreed to the dissolution of the marriage and the case was adjourned for further hearing.
