‘It’s A Shame For Nigerians To Celebrate Obama’—Utomi

Frontline activist and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Professor Pat Utomi, has said it is a shame for Nigerian politicians to be celebrating the victory of president Barack Obama, when their own political system is in shambles.

Frontline activist and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Professor Pat Utomi, has said it is a shame for Nigerian politicians to be celebrating the victory of president Barack Obama, when their own political system is in shambles.

Speaking at an inauguration celebration organised for Obama by Engineer Emmanuel Usanga, at D’Nu Grotto, Victoria Island, yesterday, Utomi called on Nigerians to emulate the electoral process that brought Obama into power.

“I’m not saying that we should not celebrate Obama. Of course, his victory as the first US black president is worth celebrating, but we need to make a change in our own political system as well”.

“The victory of Obama is a clear indication that Americans love change, so I see no reason why Nigerians should not rise up and say ‘yes’ to change,” Utomi said.

Also speaking at the event, the 2007 gubernatorial candidate for the Democratic Peoples Alliance in Lagos state, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, said “history has been made with the victory of Obama. But what matters is what we learn from history. Obama is a winner because he has people who have the mentality of winners behind him.”

The organiser of the event, Engineer Emmanuel Usanga, noted that “the purpose of this programme is to first congratulate Obama, then celebrate the removal of the immunity clause from the Nigerian constitution and to also support the Freedom Of Information Bill.”
