Nigeria’s Flying Eagles, this afternoon, defeated Egypt’s Young Pharaohs 2-0, thus begining their campaign at the ongoing U-20 Africa Youth Championship (AYC) in Kigali, Rwanda, on a winning note.

The Nigerian U-20 eagles, led by coach Ladan Basso, were not impressing in the Group B opening match, but were able to score through Kingsley Udoh, who opened scoring in the 39th minute via a header, to end the first half by 1-0.

In the second half, coach Bosso substituted skipper, Ganiu Oseni, for Gbolahan Salami, but Salami’s inclusion only gave the team the second goal. The lanky player missed several clear chances, but his deadly cross to Yakubu Alfa sealed victory for Nigeria, as Alfa netted the second goal in the 56th minute.

The Egyptians, who were not aggressive upfront, however, could not curtail the Flying Eagles’ individual play. The Nigerian team did not show much seriousness in the game like their Egyptian opponents, who played only four straight shots at goal through out the duration of the match. The Flying Eagles’ next match is against South Africa, on Thursday, while their last game is against Cote d’Ivoire, on Sunday.
